Specialisation Course: Tactical Interventions
Possibilities Of Reconciliation Through Design
Site: Panjim Promenade
Stretch from the ferry terminal to the turning point of the promenade
Seating between the road and the promenade, the trees forming a natural boundary
Ferry Terminal (Panjim to Betin)
Workers occupying the seating
Garden adjacent to the road
Site Context:
The promenade is situated opposite major state buildings including the police quarters, and the military training center. The entrance to the promenade is from the Panjim ferry terminus which receives people from Betin. The promenade hosts an influx of laborers working in the govt offices at regular intervals. The road adjacent to the promenade is a large busy road.
Betin Ferry Terminal over the years:
Critical issues of the area of study:
-
Scale of the casinos with the promenade to the road
-
Less interaction of the people to the road, the Mandovi river, and the promenade. Different things happen during the different seasons
-
Less influx of women and children on the promenade, a male-dominated space.
The unique potential of the area of study and how can it better urban life:
-
Increasing accessibility from the road
-
Generation of recreational activities, on the promenade. However the promenade may not necessarily act as a recreational space, it may also be used by fishermen and ferry users to carry out their daily activities.
Programs:
-
Rethinking the edge condition
-
Rethinking the existing bus stops
-
Making the promenade more accessible for women and children
-
Toilets
-
Slowing down traffic and making the street more pedestrian
-
Library/Pop-ups
Strategies:
-
Modular
-
Open programs
Design Question:
How do you make the space of the riverfront a little more inviting and accessible for women and children? How can the promenade act as a recreational space?
Site Plan:
Iterations:
Building steps to have a better interaction with the water and Stalls/Pop-ups which turn into spaces of sitting and shade when not in use
